Mr. President,
I am spending the time to write this letter, not because I believe it will effect the policies of your administration, but in hopes that thinking Americans will consider the real issues and problems which confront our beloved country. In short, the real state of the union.
Before I go further, a word to the “religious right” you claim as your base. I too believe in the one God. I love Him because He is merciful, I fear Him because He is just. He alone is the judge of all mankind and will judge each according to their deeds. Did not Christ condemn the Pharisees and Sadducees as hypocrites? “All have sinned and all fall short of God's glory.” So much for holier than thou!
THE STATE OF THE UNION:
The Supreme Court has held that money is “speech” and is protected under the first amendment. Because of this, some voices are inherently louder than others, making influence peddling and graft the norm in our nation’s capital. Was this not called bribery at one time?
National security has been perverted to include aberrations such as the patriot act, the doctrine of preemptive war and the national I.D. card, while our borders are left unprotected to facilitate the importation of cheap labor for those louder voices and their lust for greater profits. The American dream has become as hollow as a corporation's promise of a secure pension plan after a lifetime of service.
The foreign policy of your administration has been a disaster. Arbitrary and cynical in nature, it has made Americans among the most hated people in the world. Friends you buy are not your friends.
Know your enemy, Mr. President, the war on terror is a just cause. Those who attack America must suffer the awful consequences of their acts, hunted down and killed one-by-one if necessary. But for America to invade another country in the name of spreading our form of government flies in the face of the principals upon which this country was founded.
Finally, Mr. President I will leave you and the readers of this letter with a quote from history. You may have heard words similar to it from some of your own advisors.
“Naturally, the common people don't want war, but after all, it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag people along. Whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship, voice or no voice the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders.
“This is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country.”
Reich-Marshall Herman Goering
Nuremberg, 1945
I know that you are a man of conviction Mr. President, and I respect you for that, but please do not let your conviction close your mind to alternative solutions.
May God bless you and America. May He open all our eyes to the path to a better world.
Sincerely,
James
